Underground, icons…  are they all legends?

The use of the term iconic began in the 17^th century in England using the definition of “relating to, or having the characteristics of an icon.” The word referred in this way to a picture, representation, or a portrait. The related term iconoclast (from the Middle Greek eikonoklastēs) literally means “image destroyer”. The words were melted together by the world famous musician Prince, who was described as both “iconic” and an “iconoclast”.

Do we still need icons or destroyers when the big picture is in question? Has a window been opened during the pandemic that shows us a completely different world?
Where do our utopias end? And where does madness really begin?

The protagonists of this series are invited to converge in an artistic manner around the topics of legends, worldviews, utopias, and icons in relation to public space.

A trans offers a public forum for contemporary discourse chiefly about the city, urban space, and architecture. The art installations serve as research into cultural paradigms, contemporary lifestyles, and new experimental tendencies in urban practices and identities. Innovative strategies and interventions in urban space are presented, and then understood as transcending disciplines.

A simple display cabinet in a normal subway station of Berlin (U-Kleistpark) serves the art project space A TRANS as a platform for public discussion of the importance of contemporary art, architecture, and urbanity to this city.

The invited protagonists are: Martin Juef (Leipzig/Berlin), Bettina Weiß (Berlin), Alim Pasht-Han (Halle), Panos Balomenos (Helsinki, FI/ Athens, GR) and Concha Argüeso (Bilbao, ES/Berlin)

Underground, Ikone… alles Mythos?

Die Verwendung des Begriffs iconic begann im 17. JH in England und hatte als Bedeutung „die der Ikone sehr ähnlich ist“. Der Begriff bezog sich damit auf ein Bild, seine Darstellung oder ein Porträt.  Der artverwandte Begriff iconoclast(mittelgr. eikonoklastēs) bedeutet wörtlich „Bildzerstörer“.  Im weltberühmten Musiker Prince verschmelzen diese Begriffe, er wurde sowohl als „iconic“ wie als „iconoclast“ bezeichnet.

Brauchen wir noch Ikonen oder Zerstörer, wo das Große Ganze infrage gestellt ist? Sind während der Pandemie Fenster aufgegangen, die uns eine andere Welt zeigen? Wo enden unsere Utopien? Und wo beginnt eigentlich der Wahnsinn?

Die Protagonist*innen sind eingeladen sich den Themen Mythos, Weltsicht, Utopie, Ikone bezogen auf Raum und Öffentlichkeit in künstlerischer Weise zu nähern.

A trans bietet dazu ein öffentliches Forum für aktuelle Diskurse schwerpunktmäßig über Stadt, Raum und Architektur. Die Installationen dienen der Erforschung kultureller Paradigmen, zeitgenössischer Lifestyles und neuer experimenteller Tendenzen urbaner Praktiken und Identitäten. Innovative Strategien und Interventionen zum urbanen Raum und seiner Wahrnehmung über die Disziplinen hinaus werden unter einem auf Stadt bezogenen Jahresmotto präsentiert.

Eine einfache Schaufenster-Vitrine an einem gewöhnlichen U-Bahnhof Berlins (U-Kleistpark) dient dem Projektraum A TRANS als Plattform für eine offene Diskussion über den Stellenwert zeitgenössischer Kunst, Architektur und Urbanität in Berlin.
