The series is inspired by the film Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai by Jim Jarmusch from the year 1999 that portrays the story of societal outsiders, living in a sort of parallel universe and learning of the consequences of absolute dedication to one’s own self as an ideal.

A TRANS has invited a selection of protagonists to depict their own or someone’s journey through life as part of the exhibition cycle A Ghost Dog City. They reflect upon withdrawing and looking inwards, self-empowerment and dedication, collective memory, protest and political action as possible points of reference.

The participating artists come from different cultural backgrounds and are all in way modern nomads. All of them have developed very particular visual languages, dealing in part with opulent three-dimensional artworks or working with time-based concepts. They are: Peter Piek (Leipzig), Birgit Kjærsgaard (Arhus, DK), Thomas Sydow (Berlin), Murat Haschu (Berlin/Halle),  und Carola Rümper (Berlin).

They are invited to build upon the ICONOCLASTS and EDEN series of the last few years to create a “waypoint” for commuters and visitors to a place not normally known for exhibiting art.

The A TRANS project space uses a simple show window style glass case, directly on the platform of the Zoologischer Garten (U9) subway station, a transit hot-spot in the middle of Berlin. All ages and social groups can regularly, or maybe simply by chance, take part in the artistic process as well as the accompanying performative formats. This glass case was born as a “pandemic stopgap” to exhibit art and was received very favorably. The challenging task of the curator remains – to keep finding a balance between high artistic quality, artistic freedom, and the everyday indifference to the arts mirrored in one of the most public spaces of the city of Berlin with all its vast urban and social contexts.

Der gleichnamige Film Ghost Dog-Der Weg des Samurai von Jim Jarmusch aus dem Jahr 1999 schildert die Geschichte von Außenseitern einer Gesellschaft, die in einer Art Parallelwelt leben und die Konsequenzen einer bedingungslosen Hingabe des eigenen Ichs an ein Ideal erfahren.

A trans lädt die ausgewählten Protagonisten ein, innerhalb des Programms A Ghost Dog City ihre/eine Lebensreise zu thematisieren. Reflexionen über Innerlichkeit, Rückzug, Selbstermächtigung und Hingabe, über ein kollektives Gedächtnis, über Protest und aktives (politisches) Handeln sind mögliche Anknüpfungspunkte.

Die eingeladenen Künstler*innen stammen aus unterschiedlichen Kulturkreisen und sind moderne Nomaden auf ihre Weise. Alle haben ihre sehr eigene Bildersprache entwickelt, agieren teils in opulenten dreidimensionalen Kunstwerken oder arbeiten mit medialen Konzepten. Es sind: Peter Piek (Leipzig), Birgit Kjærsgaard (Arhus, DK), Murat Haschu (Berlin/Halle), Thomas Sydow (Berlin) und Carola Rümper (Berlin).

Anknüpfend an die Serien ICONOCLASTS und EDEN der letzten Jahre sind sie eingeladen, im wörtlichen Sinne „Anhaltepunkte“ an einem eher kunstfernen Ort für Passanten und Besucher*innen zu realisieren.

Der Projektraum A TRANS nutzt dazu eine einfache Schaufenster-Vitrine direkt am Bahnsteig Zoologischer Garten (U9), einem der Hotspot des Transits inmitten Berlins. Alle Alters- und Gesellschaftsgruppen können regelmäßig oder zufällig am Prozess, sowie den begleitenden performativen Formaten teilhaben. Die Vitrine, geboren als „Pandemie-Notlösung“ ist als künstlerische Vitrine eingeführt und erfährt sehr positive Resonanz. Die herausfordernde Aufgabe als Kuratorin bleibt, die Balance zwischen hoher künstlerischer Qualität, Kunstfreiheit und gespiegelter Gleichgültigkeit gegenüber Kunst und Kultur an einem der öffentlichsten Orte Berlins mit all seinen unterschiedlichsten urbanen und sozialen Erscheinungsformen immer wieder neu herzustellen.
