The Farnsworth House by Mies van der Rohe in 1951 is an icon of modernism. In Safe for the Wave the building stands on a cliff by the sea. The remains of a glass superstructure around it tell of efforts to protect the house from a tsunami that never came. The interior decorating, made up of second hand furniture and banal everyday objects, also questions the ideals of modernism. A return to nature? But of what sort?

Michael Birn (born 1976) is an architect, painter, and set designer. His architectural models, paintings, and stage designs work with the relationship between space and narrative. In 2008 he was a Schlubach-Hirschmeier Scholar at the Akademie der Künste Berlin. Since 2017 he teaches production design at the Filmuniversität Potsdam.
