“I’m ready” is the refrain of the song “Zoo Station” from U2’s 1991 album “Achtung Baby!.“ Recorded in Berlin, the song—like the band’s name itself—refers to the location: the Zoologischer Garten station.

…space, stimulus, weightlessness, vertigo, process, illusion, play, amusement, confusion, music, light, intoxication, philosophy, friendship, and transience…

The area around Zoo Station became a site for recreation starting in 1891 with the establishment of the “West-Eisbahn” amusement park. In building regulations, the term “Fliegende Bauten” (temporary structures)—applied here to carousels—describes an architectural typology designed to be repeatedly set up and dismantled. The analog video still for the work “I’m ready” was created during a ride on a carousel by Alexandra Spiegel.

“I’m ready” captures the moment before letting go. It signifies a readiness for the rush, the acceleration, the loss of control, and the change—an act of escapism and an embrace of the unknown. The carousel becomes an image of a state suspended between euphoria and focus, between freedom and a sense of surrender. Ultimately, time itself remains the true movement. At the same time, the carousel represents a social dynamic: closeness is forged not by background, but by shared experience.

“I’m ready” explores this fleeting moment between holding on and fading away. The photography does not depict architecture in the classical sense; instead, it reveals spaces that emerge only through movement—spaces composed of light, memory, friendship, and time. The resulting space comes into being in the very moment of motion; everything is in a state of flux. The carousel thus becomes a metaphor, connecting people with objects, bodies with machines, and individuals through a shared experience. Within the circle of movement, relationships emerge that are as real as they are ephemeral.

Media scholar Ralf Bohn describes the carousel as a site of a threefold economy. The carousel ride establishes a connection between subject and object, generates self-experience through the controlled loss of orientation, and moves between consumption and an ascetic self-dissolution. In the ensuing dizziness, the self dissolves for a moment, only to re-form afterwards. This form of self-dissolution is not a disappearance, but a transition. In the sense of dialectical *Aufhebung* (sublation), the existing state is not simply extinguished but transformed. Movement generates insight. The loss of control opens up new perception: “I’m ready.”

Alexandra Spiegel is an architect and artist who lives and works in Berlin, engaging in interdisciplinary practice. Her work is exhibited in art institutions and museums and is represented in various public and private collections.

„I‘m ready“ ist der Refrain des 1991 erschienenen U2-Songs „Zoo Station“ vom Album „Achtung Baby!“. Der in Berlin aufgenommene Song bezieht sich, ebenso wie der Bandname selbst, auf den Ausstellungsort, den Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten.

…Raum, Reiz, Schwerelosigkeit, Schwindel, Prozess, Illusion, Spiel, Vergnügen, Verwirrung, Musik, Licht, Rausch, Philosophie, Freundschaft und Vergänglichkeit…

Das Gebiet um den Bahnhof Zoo diente ab 1891 mit der Errichtung des Vergnügungsparks „West- Eisbahn“ der Erholung. Der bauordnungsrechtliche Begriff FLIEGENDE BAUTEN für Karusselle beschreibt eine Architekturtopologie, die dazu bestimmt sind, wiederholt aufgestellt und abgebaut zu werden. Während einer Karussellfahrt von Alexandra Spiegel ist das analoge Videostill der Arbeit „I´m ready“ entstanden.

„I‘m ready“ beschreibt den Moment vor dem Loslassen. Bereit für den Rausch, für die Beschleunigung, für Kontrollverlust und Veränderung. Als Eskapismus und Zustimmung zum Ungewissen. Das Karussell wird zum Bild eines Zustands zwischen Euphorie und Konzentration, zwischen Freiheit und Ausgeliefertsein. Am Ende bleibt die Zeit selbst die eigentliche Bewegung. Gleichzeitig beschreibt das Karussell eine soziale Figur. Nähe entsteht nicht durch Herkunft, sondern durch gemeinsame Erfahrung.

„I‘m ready“ thematisiert diesen flüchtigen Moment zwischen Festhalten und Verschwinden. Die Fotografie zeigt keine Architektur im klassischen Sinne. Zu sehen sind Räume, die erst durch Bewegung entstehen – Räume aus Licht, Erinnerung, Freundschaft und Zeit. Dieser Raum ereignet sich im Moment der Bewegung. Alles ist im Prozess. Das Karussell wird dabei zur Metapher. Es verbindet Menschen mit Dingen, Körper mit Maschinen und Individuen mit einer gemeinsamen Erfahrung. Im Kreis der Bewegung entstehen Beziehungen, die ebenso real wie vergänglich sind.

Der Medienwissenschaftler Ralf Bohn beschreibt das Karussell als Ort einer dreifachen Ökonomie. Die Karussellfahrt schaffe eine Verbindung zwischen Subjekt und Objekt, erzeuge Selbst-Erfahrung durch den kontrollierten Verlust von Orientierung und bewege sich zwischen Konsum und asketischer Selbstaufhebung. Im Schwindel löst sich das Ich für einen Moment auf, um sich anschließend neu zu formieren. Diese Form der Selbstaufhebung ist kein Verschwinden, sondern ein Übergang. Im Sinne der dialektischen Aufhebung wird das Bestehende nicht einfach ausgelöscht, sondern verwandelt. Bewegung erzeugt Erkenntnis. Kontrollverlust eröffnet neue Wahrnehmungen: „I‘m ready“.

Alexandra Spiegel ist Architektin und Künstlerin. Sie lebt und arbeitet interdisziplinär in Berlin. Ihr Werk wird in Kunstinstitutionen und Museen ausgestellt und ist in verschiedenen öffentlichen und privaten Sammlungen vertreten.
