Why not a rhinoceros?
Sometimes a good question can be answered calmly. Sometimes the question involves a confrontation and we can only hope that we will be able to come up with something.
Lothar Frenz claims in his book „Nashörner. Ein Porträt.“ that this animal appears again and again in the history of art when a new age is in the making.
In the new light and sound installation by Concha Argüeso sited in Zoologischer Garten vitrine, we come face-to-face with the drawing of a stampeding rhinoceros. The illuminated animal shows its beautiful skin made of wax, while at the same time making sounds. The rhinoceros seems to be in a hurry to jump from the past into the future.
But is it afraid, is it angry? Can we make contact with it, is the rhinoceros our only chance to escape into the unknown?
Concha Argüeso lives and works as an artist in Berlin and Bilbao, Spain.

Manchmal kann man mit einer guten Frage gelassen umgehen, manchmal ist die Frage schon Konfrontation und es bleibt nur die Hoffnung, dass uns dazu etwas einfällt.
Lothar Frenz behauptet in seinem Buch „Nashörner. Ein Porträt“, dass dieses Tier in der Kunstgeschichte immer wieder auftaucht, wenn ein neues Zeitalter ansteht.
In der Vitrine am Zoologischen Garten mit der neuen Licht- und Klanginstallation von Concha Argüeso begegnet uns die Zeichnung eines stampfenden Nashorns. Das beleuchtete Tier zeigt seine schöne Haut aus Wachs und gibt Geräusche von sich. Es scheint es eilig zu haben, von der Vergangenheit in die Zukunft zu springen.
Hat es Angst, ist es wütend, können wir mit ihm Kontakt aufnehmen oder ist es unsere einzige Chance, mit ihm ins Ungewisse zu entfliehen?
Concha Argüeso lebt und arbeitet als Künstlerin in Berlin und Bilbao, Spanien.
